World Reader - Christmas 2014

Books unlock new opportunities for education. Education unlocks the potential for a better future.

According to Veronica: “Reading is important to me in life because I would like to become a teacher.”

With her e-reader, Veronica has access to 100 books, from her school textbooks to storybooks. Further, her parents and her community can read thousands more books on their cell phones with Worldreader Mobile.

We always welcome your thoughts and questions about Worldreader. There are many more great stories we would like to share. Once more, thank you for believing the power of literacy to change the world.

Sincerely, Brian Gougherty
Senior Development Manager

World Reader - a new charity

In order to continue our work in memory of our daughter Anna, we are now contributing to a new charity set up to bring ebooks to children in: Ghana | Kenya | Malawi | Rwanda | South Africa | Tanzania | Uganda | Zambia | Zimbabwe.

We've made a contribution for Christms 2014 and wish all these young girls a Happy Christmas and every success for 2015.

As an aid worker, and affectionate, caring girl, Anna was passionate about helping people. And, of course she loved books. Family and friends have raised considerable funds over the years for the school she was helping to build and is named after her, but we're now looking to expand our horizons to reach more children. We believe education for all is vitally important, even more so in today's world. As I writer I'm very familiar with the Kindle, so we've chosen World Reader.

What do they do?

This is what they have to say:
Creating a Literate World Literacy is transformative: it increases earning potential, decreases inequality, improves health outcomes and breaks the cycle of poverty (UNESCO). Yet there are 740 million illiterate people in this world and 250 million children of primary school age who lack basic reading and writing skills (UNESCO). Books are necessary for the development of these skills, and still 50% of schools in Africa have few or no books at all (SACMEQ II). Worldreader is on a mission to bring digital books to every child and her family, so that they can improve their lives.

Technology

The increasing ubiquity and diminishing costs of digital technology enable us to solve these problems in a simple and straight-forward way. Wherever possible, we build on digital platforms and mobile connectivity in the developing world to make our books available to children and families who need them the most.

We provide e-readers to schools in need through both sponsorships and sales.

We saw that cell phones were widely prevalent in developing countries so we created a mobile app which runs on feature phones and Android devices. Our publishing team works hard to optimize titles for the smallest screen sizes.

Our rapid scaling capacity is the most effective and inexpensive way to distribute books to those in limited and no-access areas. And it works: after less than 5 months in our program, children show significant improvements in fluency and comprehension.

Never Forgotten

It is sixteen years on 24th August since we lost our lovely Anna, but not a day goes by without us remembering her. Here's a picture to celebrate her love of animals. As a child feeding a pet lamb.

And her love of horses as a young girl. This is Lady being fed.

Ever in our hearts.
